EXAMPLE: SODIUM (NA) PLUS CHLORINE (CL)

· Sodium (metal) loses one electron -> becomes Na+

· Chlorine (nonmetal) gains one electron -> becomes Cl-

· Result: They form the ionic compound NaCl (table salt)
