How to use this learning material.
This learning material is aimed to help students prepare for the Wild Wisdom Global Challenge. This year's theme "From Coastline to the Seafloor: An Ocean Odyssey" aims to cover everything related to our oceans and seas.
We have six subthemes or chapters under the main theme. These are given below Chapter One: Marine Diversity and Distribution

By the end of this chapter students will understand what marine biodiversity is, why it varies across the world's oceans, and why conserving biodiversity is essential for healthy ecosystems and human well-being.
This chapter introduces you to what biodiversity is, what it means, why marine biodiversity matters, and why biodiversity is unevenly distributed across oceans.

Why do oceans contain such extraordinary diversity of life, and why does that diversity matter? &
Why are some marine environments full of life while others contain only a few specialized species?
A drop of seawater may contain millions of microscopic organisms, while the same ocean supports blue whales larger than buses. Oceans host extraordinary diversity but scientists estimate many marine species remain undiscovered.

Imagine standing beside the ocean. From the shore, it may seem endless but familiar, waves, saltwater, fish, perhaps seabirds overhead. Yet beneath the surface lies a world so vast and unexplored that scientists have better maps of parts of Mars than they do of Earth's seafloor.
The ocean covers around seventy-one percent of Earth's surface, making it the largest habitat on our planet. It includes warm tropical reefs crowded with colorful fish, polar waters where seals and penguins survive the extreme cold, and deep ocean trenches (e.g. Mariana trench) where life exists under immense pressure and complete darkness. Some organisms living in these environments produce light, survive without sunlight and low oxygen, or even live for centuries.
Scientists estimate that around two point two million species may live in the ocean, yet fewer than one-tenth have been identified. Every year, researchers discover species that were previously unknown to science. This means our understanding of marine life is still incomplete.
Fun fact: Last year a group of scientists discovered a total of one thousand one hundred twenty-one marine species, the largest number of species discovered yet in a year. Yet scientists estimate that nearly ninety percent of marine species remain undocumented.
One example is a pale deep-sea octopus discovered in the Pacific Ocean nicknamed "Casper" because of its ghostly appearance. The octopus reminded scientists how much remains unknown about life in the deep sea.
The ocean is not simply a large body of water filled with organisms but it is a complex system where millions of species interact with one another and with their environment. Tiny plankton drifting near the surface help produce oxygen, while whales transport nutrients across oceans through their migrations and feeding patterns. Coral reefs support thousands of species within relatively small areas, and deep-sea ecosystems survive under conditions once thought impossible for life.
Understanding marine biodiversity means understanding these forms of life, the places where they occur, and the relationships that connect them.
