In the previous lesson you have learnt about computer software. An operating system is system software that runs on a computer. Every computer must have an operating system to run other programs and applications. An operating system is a program that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware. Without an operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless. Operating system performs basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. In this lesson, you will learn about functions of operating system and types of operating system.
