FOETAL GROWTH RESTRICTION (FGR SYN: INTRAUTERINE GROWTH RESTRICTION [IUGR])

Previously called intrauterine growth restriction or retardation, low birth weight infants who are small for gestational age (SGA) are now termed as suffering from fetal growth restriction. The term intrauterine growth retardation used in the past has now been discarded as retardation implies retarded mental function. FGR is defined as failure of a fetus to reach its genetic growth potential in utero putting it at risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Using the World Health Organization and cut-off, the term SGA is used when the newborn weight is below the tenth percentile for its gestational age.
