Ida Jean (Orlando) Pelletier (nineteen twenty-six to two thousand seven) was a prominent nursing leader who was among the first to conceptualize nursing as an interactive process. She earned her nursing diploma from New York Medical College and a Master's degree in Mental Health Nursing from Columbia University. Her Deliberative Nursing Process Theory was developed in the nineteen fifties and officially introduced in her nineteen fifty-eight book, The Dynamic Nurse-Patient Relationship, Function, Process and Principles.

The theory emphasizes the thoughtful, intentional, and reflective nature of nursing. It posits that nursing is a dynamic interpersonal process revolving entirely around the interaction between the nurse and the patient. Rather than following routine tasks, nurses must engage in critical thinking to actively think through their actions.
